Stephen Lewton an impressive young amateur golfer visiting Australia for the first time today took out the prestigious Imagetec 100th NSW Medal Championship. The tournament was held over the last 3 days at Cromer and Mona Vale Golf Clubs with the final 36 holes being played at Mona Vale Golf Club today.
Lewton recorded scores of 69, 71, 64 and 71 for a total of 275 (-11) to take out the title by one stroke from consistent NSW State player Rohan Blizard (NSW Golf Club), and Tim Stewart (Monash Golf Club) the reigning Australian Amateur Champion on 279.
Lewton’s morning score of 64 consisted of six birdies, two eagles and two bogeys, which moved him into joint leader going into the afternoon round. At one stage he opened up a five shot lead with six holes to go but came back to the field with a triple bogey on the 13th hole and a bogey on the 15th hole. He promptly sank a three metre birdie putt on the 16th and held that lead through the last three holes.
Late charges during the day came from local favourite Michael Raseta (Mona Vale Golf Club), who recorded rounds of 66 and 68 to jump from 26th place to 4th and the ever consistent Englishman Gary Wolstenholme who in the afternoon round birdied seven of the first eight holes.
Lewton’s first visit has resulted in a victory in the Avondale Medal, an 18th place in the Lake Macquarie International Championship and a victory here. Lewton now attempts to add the Imagetec 100th NSW Amateur Championship (Match play) to his resume. The Matchplay is to be held at Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club and commences on Wednesday 7th February.
