South Australian Jens Nilsson has produced a sensational second round firing and course record ten-under-par 62 in the second round of the NSW PGA Championship. Nilsson leads at 13-under-par, one stroke clear of defending champion Paul Marantz (67) and former Queensland and Victorian Amateur Champion Aaron Pike (65).
Starting on the tenth hole Nilsson began swiftly with a birdie at ten, followed by an eagle at the par five twelfth hole. Consecutive birdies at 14 and 15 saw him make the turn in five-under-par. Knowing that Marantz and Pike were clubhouse leaders at 12-under, Nilsson did not let up recording a further five birdies on the front side to close with a course record ten-under-par 62 and the outright lead.
Amateur sensation Aaron Pike finished with a seven-under-par 65 which included two eagles on the par five tenth and twelfth holes. Pike, who has had an illustrious amateur career will be looking to improve on his forth place finish in the MasterCard Masters at Huntingdale and claim his first tournament victory against the professionals.
“This is where I want to be, this is who I have to beat,” Pike explained, as the 21-year-old is planning on switching to the professional ranks at the end of 2007 with the lucrative European Tour his immediate goal.
In a tournament highlighted by low scoring, a score of five-under-par or better was required to survive the 36 hole cut with 57 players teeing it up for the final two rounds.
Tee times for the final two rounds will commence at 7:30am with the leading group teeing off at 11:00am. Entry into Riverside Oaks is free and spectators are welcomed with Riverside Oaks owner Pat Cunningham looking to create a festival style atmosphere over the next two days.
