Dodt gaining momentum at Aussie Amateur

IN: News | Australian Mens Amateur | Australian Amateur Championship (2007) | by Anthony Powter | 22 Mar 2007

Andrew Dodt's putter is running hot during the morning action at the Australian Amateur with the Queenslander finishing at 4 under to share a five way lead. Ray Beaufils was the early morning standout, blasting away the NSW layout getting to 4 under after 9 and currently is joint leader after 16 with Dodt, Josh Younger, Troy Ropiha and Brenton Haines.

Defending champion Tim Stewart is well positioned to defend his title finishing his first round at 2 under, two off the pace. Rick Kulacz is even after 13, whilst local favourite, Rohan Blizard finished steady at 1 under.

Jamie Arnold produced something special on the home run to remain in the Championship. The National Squad member found himself at 7 over after 13 but was able to claw back to finish his first round 3 over. Aaron Pike is another who's had a difficult start and will need to make a move. Pike is 5 over after 13.

With top line international players like England's Jamie Moul and Steve Lewton teeing off this afternoon, the morning groups will be seeking to score low, taking full advantage of their position knowing it will be their turn to deal with the afternoon conditions when the draw swaps for the second round tomorrow.

One local player to follow this afternoon is Paulo Monitoya.

Monitoya is identified in the program from Costa Rica, however, plays out of St Michael's golf club, the neighbouring course to NSW. Monitoya in a recent Sydney major pennant match disposed of world junior amateur champion Matt Giles, he's familiar with NSW and accustomed to handling difficult conditions on exposed courses like St Michael's and NSW.

Earlier in the week I commented those who have the patience and ability to adapt to the unpredictable nature associated with playing NSW should prosper. At present the course is calm and available for low scoring. The issue then becomes will it remain like this afternoon; unlikely.
