Freak weather pounds field at NSW

IN: News | Australian Mens Amateur | Australian Amateur Championship (2007) | by Anthony Powter | 25 Mar 2007

It was always going to be a question of "when" and not "if" mother nature would play a role in deciding the 2007 Australian Amateur Championship and it's certainly in full force for the final day. Early morning players have returned cards with 23, many are in double figures after only nine holes. Putting is becoming impossible and those "sucker" pin positions will account for their fair share of carnage as the day unfolds.

Arriving this morning just after 10.00am, I immediately went searching for the wet weather and wind protection gear, the wind was already up, rain was coming and going, totally unpredictable. I wasn't the only one searching for protection from the elements. Players were looking more like snow skiers as opposed to golfers, huddled around under trees and behind tee boxes, reluctantly making their way onto the first tee when called.

With 32 spots available to progress to the match play stage, anything could happen as the afternoon unfolds. The strong southerly winds and showers have provided an opportunity for those who can knuckle down and adapt to the conditions to do well. It's simply a matter of survival out there. Officials are under the gun with rulings about moving balls on exposed greens. Tempers will be frayed, those who keep composure will do well.

The leaders acutely aware of what lays ahead, nothing can prepare for what the players are about to experience. Whilst luck will play a part, whoever holds the Australian Amateur Medal this afternoon will be a true champion; in fact all players should be receiving a medal given what they're about to experience.
