Rumford and Parsons make good start in Spain

The final stage of qualifying for the 2003 European Tour is now under way with round one of of six being completed overnight.

The Pals and Emporda courses in the north of Spain are the venues for the one hundred and sixty eight players attempting to secure one of the top thirty five (and ties) cards that will afford them full exemption next season. Both courses will be played twice by each player in the first four rounds following which the field focuses on the Emporda course for the final thirty six holes.

At the Pals course, the lead is held by Scot Barry Hume after an opening 65. Australian Lucas Parsons has started with a 67 to be in fourth place at that venue, with last week’s New South Wales Open winner, Terry Price, 13th at three under 69.

Queensland’s Adam Crawford a two under 70, New Zealander Stephen Scahill a 71, John Sutherland a 72, Gareth Paddison 73, Marcus Fraser 73 and Scott Gardiner, Daniel Gaunt and Brad Kennedy 74.

At the nearby Emporda course Brett Rumford opened brilliantly wih a 62 to lead by one. Ed Stedman is around 30th, (actual scores unavailable) Steve Bowditch 50th and Elliot Boult towards the last of the eighty five players at that course.

The cut will be made at the completion of seventy two holes to the top seventy five players who will complete the final thirty six holes.
