Lonard and Beem in finals at Hyundai Team Matches

2001 Hyundai champions, Mark Calcavecchia and Fred Couples fired five birdies and three birdies respectively, to defeat the pairing of Scott McCarron and Peter Jacobsen – 5 & 4 in the first round of the US$1.2 million Hyundai Team Matches at the beautiful Monarch Beach Golf Links in California.
Australian Peter Lonard, who has enjoyed a highly successful rookie year on the PGA Tour, fired a superb seven birdies to defeat Jerry Kelly and Chris Smith 3 & 2. Lonard, who was paired with Rich Beem, will line up against the pairing of Calcavecchia and Couples in the final. The winners will each take home prize money of US$100,000 plus a new car.

The LPGA’s Dottie Pepper and Julie Inkster overcame Laura Diaz and Heather Bowie 2 & 1 and will now go through to face Kane and Moodie tomorrow. Defending champions Lorie Kane and Janice Moodie fired eight birdies to overpower Beth Bauer and Grace Park 4 & 3.
PGA Senior Tour champions, Jim Thorpe and John Jacobs defeated Doug Tewell and Bruce Lietzke 2 & 1. Thorpe and Jacobs will now take on Allen Doyle and Dana Quigley for the Seniors title Sunday (US Time) after defeating Bruce Fleisher and Australia’s David Graham 3 & 1.
