No playoff this week for Montgomerie

Colin Montgomerie ensured that he would at least get one victory of his own this year with a two shot win in the TCL Classic in Guangdong, Southern China. Just seven days ago Montgomerie had shared the Volvo Masters victory with Bernhard Langer but this time his last round 67 saw him run out a two shot winner over Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee.
Jaidee had started round four two ahead of the Scot but by the time they had reached the fifth hole they were level and a mistake free five birdie round saw Montgomerie draw clear. Thongchai challenged again with birdies on fourteen and fifteen but bogies on sixteen and eighteen, put paid to any remaining hopes he held. Thongchai's second placing, given the money involved here, will move him to second on the money list behind India's Arjun Atwal and with three lucrative events remaining this season, he stands a very good chance of retaining the money title he won in 2001.
China's Liang Wen-chong was third, four shots behind Thongchai, which when you consider he opened the event with a 78 on Thursday, was some effort. Michael Campbell and Bob May tied for fourth.
New Zealander Eddie Lee, in his first professional tournament was 43rd, tied with the leading Australian Dean Alaban, New Zealander Richard Best was 47th sharing that position with Michael Wright, Terry Pilkadaris 52nd and Ian Edwards 64th.
The Asian PGA Tour now moves to Taiwan for this coming week's BMW Asian Open an event co-sanctioned by both the Asian PGA and European PGA Tours. The event starts the 2003 European Tour season if that makes sense.
