The 2001 Australian Open kicked off today but there are several names at the top of the leaderboard that you may not have expected. World number 4, Ernie Els and Rod Pampling lead the field at -5 (66) but where you as you may expect to see the likes of Allenby, Appleby and Adam Scott, the top scores of the day came from lesser known names such as Michael Wright and Brad Andrews, who both sit at -3 and in 3rd place along with veteran Peter Lonard.
There were also a few players that didn’t perform to expected standards including American Charles Howell who shot a 75, Thomas Bjorn at 76 and Peter Senior (77) amongst others.
Robert Allenby, the Australian PGA winner last weekend at Royal Queensland, had an inconsistent day, birdieing the third and fourth holes, bogeying six and seven, another two birdies at the eighth and 10th holes, a bogey at 13, and trading a birdie at 16 with a bogey at 17.
Craig Parry, Richard Green and Michael Long all finished at 1 (72), while Paul Gow, who had earlier been as high as -2, ended the round at 2 (73) along with Kiwi Richard Lee and Adam Scott.
