US win weather plagued UBS Warburg Cup

The jury is still out on this event, the horrific weather prevailing all week, doing little to enhance its overall perception. It has, however, built on its inaugural staging and it does also offer the opportunity to see many of the games' modern day greats. A field that includes Palmer, Player, Irwin, Watson, Langer, Faldo, Strange and O'Meara, Floyd, Woosnam and Lehman can't be all bad, in fact, thirteen of the twenty-four players are major winners.

Essentially the event brings together two twelve-man teams from both the US and the Rest of the World. Six of those are from the age group 40 through 49 the other six from the over-50's brigade. It is, if you like, the older age group's version of the Presidents Cup.

Gary Player and Arnold Palmer captained the respective teams and both were required to play. Player handled Palmer in the singles 6 & 5 but both tasted success in the combined matches, Player teaming with Faldo to beat Palmer and Strange in the foursomes and Palmer teaming with Watson to beat Player and Langer in the fourball.

The singles today were taken out by the US side by eight to four giving them the overall victory by 14.5 to 9.5 after leading into the singles 6.5 to 5.5.

Australians Rodger Davis and Stewart Ginn each contributed to the Rest of the World side with Ginn and Davis combining to beat Mark O'Meara and Paul Azinger in the fourball although both were beaten in the singles, Ginn a narrow loser to Gilder and Davis to Irwin 2 & 1.

Unlike the Presidents and Ryder Cups this event offers prizemoney to all participants with each member of the US side picking up $US150,000.
