Three New Zealanders – James Gill (Hamilton), Danny Lee (Springfield) and Nick Gillespie (Hastings) – and Australian match-play champion Rohan Blizard have won through to the semi-finals of the New Zealand match-play championship at the Hamilton Golf Club.

New Zealand’s top two amateurs, Gill, 21, and Lee, 16, square off in the first semi-final this afternoon and Blizard, 22, plays 19-year-old Gillespie in the second match.

Gill had three successive bogeys late on the back nine, but held on to beat Australian Brent Watson, 1 up, in the quarter-finals, while Lee came from 2 down at 15 to oust Bay of Plenty’s Jared Pender at the last.

Lee chipped in for birdie at 16, holed a 7m breaking birdie putt at 17 and won the last with a bogey to Pender’s double-bogey.

Blizard had four birdies and just one bogey in beating fellow New South Welshman, Grant Scott, at the 17th, Blizard holing a 6m birdie putt at 17 to seal their match, and Gillespie, 2 down after 10, had three birdies on the back nine to end the aspirations of Aucklander Leighton James at the 17th.
