The beautiful golf course at the Bribie Island Golf Club will host the 2007 Queensland Medal this week and the State’s leading amateur golfers will not be disappointed. The layout at Bribie is considered by many as one of the State’s best, and the current condition of the course is again exceptional.
The 72 hole strokeplay event will be held from Wednesday 2nd to Friday 4th May. A capacity field of 156 players will contest the first 2 rounds, with the leading 60 players plus ties to play 36 holes on the Friday.
A total of 212 entries were received in total for the Championship, including 70 from exempt players. The 142 non-exempt players have been required to pre-qualify at either Redcliffe (North) last Thursday 26th or Carbrook (South) on Monday 30th April. They are 43 spots on offer at each course.
Queensland has some promising players in its amateur ranks at the moment including recently crowned Australian Amateur Strokeplay Champion, Andrew Dodt. Dodt has had a phenomenal 6 months where he finished leading amateur at the MFS Australian Open in November, followed by his biggest win to date in the Australian Strokeplay at New South Wales Golf Club in March. He will be one to watch as he attempts to win his first Queensland Medal.
Aaron Pike (Indooroopilly) has been playing well of late and will be keen to do well at Bribie. Pike shot to prominence over the summer when he led the Mastercard Masters at Huntingdale to eventually finish 4th behind Justin Rose.
No doubt Dodt and Pike will be wary of the younger brigade that include State Junior Team members Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture) and Tarquin MacManus (Pacific). Nisbet and MacManus have been outstanding over the last 12 months and a win in the Medal would not be a surprise. Both have shown the ability to shoot some very low scores and will be watched closely over the next few years.
Of course the players will be vying for the title of Queensland Medallist but they will also have the in the back of their mind that the top 16 players will qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship at Indooroopilly Golf Club from the 8th âÄ” 11th May. The Amateur is held in the traditional match play format that still exists worldwide to decide most of the world’s prestigious amateur championships.
