National Squad member, Aaron Pike has got off to a flyer in the 2007 Queensland Medal being held at Bribie Island Golf Club with a superb opening round of 66 (-6) this morning. He leads by only one shot over the Gold Coast’s Nathan Baker (Southport), who shot a 67 (-5) to be in outright second place after the completed morning rounds.
Pike had the putter working well during his fine round which included five birdies and an eagle on the par 5, 12th (his 3rd). A bogey on the par 4 1st was the only blemish to his card.
Rika Batibasaga (Indooroopilly) is also in touch with the leader, just two shots back after a round of 68 (-4), while Brett Rankin and Cameron Powell are a further shot back after excellent rounds of 69 (-3).
The golf course at the Bribie Island Golf Club has been presented in superb condition and has drawn plenty of compliments from the players. In a time of drought, the course and greens could not be better and are a credit to the staff.
The players will all contest their second rounds tomorrow with the field then cut to the leading 60 players plus ties, who will play 36 holes on Friday. Importantly the top 16 players will then qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship (Match Play) next week at Indooroopilly Golf Club.
