Pike leads Queensland Medal at Bribie

After the close of play on day one at the 2007 Queensland Medal, National Squad member, Aaron Pike (pictured below – Indooroopilly) holds a one stroke advantage over three players, following his superb opening round of 66 (-6). In equal second place, shooting rounds of 67 (-5) are Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture), Kevin Lee (Oxley) and Nathan Baker (Southport).

Pike enjoyed the firm and fast greens that are present here this week and putted very well in his round that consisted of five birdies and an eagle on the 12th (his 3rd). A bogey on the par 4, 1st hole (his 10th) was the only blemish in an otherwise great round.

In outright fifth place is Rika Batibasaga (Indooroopilly), who remains in touch with the leader Pike following an excellent opening round of 68 (-4). A host of players are then a further shot back including Brett Rankin (Pacific), Tarquin MacManus (Pacific) and Thomas Mezera (The Grand). Interestingly, Mezera was the first alternate for the Championship and was at the golf course at 6:30am and waited until 11:09 when he gained a start following the late withdrawal of Justin Barry.

The Queensland Medal is being played at the Bribie Island Golf Club, located just over an hour drive north of Brisbane. The golf course has been presented in superb condition and has drawn plenty of compliments from the players. In a time of drought in this part of Queensland, the course and greens could not be better and are a credit to the Superintendent Sean O’Leary and his staff.

The players will all contest their second rounds tomorrow with the field then cut to the leading 60 players plus ties, who will play 36 holes on Friday. Importantly the top 16 players will then qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship (Match Play) next week at Indooroopilly Golf Club.
