The second day of the 2007 Queensland Medal was highlighted by some extraordinary golf, and none more so than Kevin Lee (Oxley), who fired a superb round of 64 (-8). Starting the day just one behind Aaron Pike after an opening 67 (-5), Lee managed an unbelievable ten birdies in his round. Following his round he commented that he actually struck the ball better in round one, but had the putter “red hot” today which had been the difference.
Leading the Championship at an impressive 13 under par, Lee will take a five shot lead into tomorrow’s final 36 holes, however we know that there is plenty of work yet to be done with some quality golfers in second place. Overnight leader Aaron Pike (Indooroopilly) followed up his first round 66 (-6) with a 70 (-2) today while Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise) fired a great round of 65 (-7). Both Pike and Beaufils are part of Golf Australia’s National Squad and will be keen to put some pressure on Lee when they all play together tomorrow in the final group at 8:00am.
Only a further shot back at 7 under par, are Rika Batibasaga (Indooroopilly) and Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture) who shot rounds of 69 (-3) and 70 (-2) respectively. With 36 holes tomorrow both will consider themselves a chance providing they can get off to a good start in the morning round.
16-year-old Eagle Chang (Oxley) fired an impressive round of 65 (-7) today to also move into contention at 6 under par. Chang has experienced a disappointing past 18 months after reaching some extraordinary heights at a young age. Chang amazed the golfing world in 2005 when at just 14 years of age, he claimed the Australian Junior Championship to be the youngest ever winner of the event. It is great to see him back in great form and many will be keen to see him do well tomorrow.
The players will contest their final two rounds tomorrow with the leading players teeing off at 8:00am for round 3 and then at 12:30pm for round 4. Importantly the top 16 players will then qualify for the Queensland Amateur Championship (Match Play) next week at Indooroopilly Golf Club.
