Mi Hyun Kim might be one of the shorter hitters on the LPGA Tour but today, on one of the longer courses they play on the LPGA Tour, she again displayed that length does not always conquer a long golf course.
“The course is too long for me, because it’s so wet, and I’m not a long hitter,” said Kim. “So I just keep trying to do my way. I didn’t know even par can get a win today. So I am a little bit lucky.”
Kim defeated Juli Inkster, 17 years her senior, in a playoff at the SemGroup Championship at Cedar Ridge in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, after Kim had earlier bogeyed the last and Inkster had made birdie. The two shot swing forced the pair into extra time but Kim was able to par the first extra hole to take the title despite being some way behind Inkster from the tee.
For Kim it was her eighth LPGA Tour career title and comes after making some changes to her golf swing in recent times. “I change the swing a little bit since last year. My backswing, it almost hit the ground,” said Kim. “Since last year, I have a new coach, Brian Mogg, he wanted to change the swing and make it more compact. When I have to change the swing, I make win and I make a lot of good score.”
Japan’s, Ai Miyazato, had a great chance to win her first event on the LPGA Tour but she bogeyed the last to miss the playoff by one, while Angela Stanford’s triple bogey at the third hole today would prove very costly especially given that she too missed the playoff by one.
The best of the Australians in the event. and the only one to make the cut. was Katherine Hull who finally found some form after a tough time over the last eighteen months. She finished in a share of 9th.
The LPGA Tour now heads to Virginia for the lucrative Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill.
