John Fearnley (Dunheved Golf Club) staved of a determined defending champion Adam Revai (The Australian Golf Club) to take out the 2007 NSW Mid Amateur Championship by one stroke. Jamie Lynch (Southport Golf Club) finished five strokes off the pace in third position.
Fearnley took a one stroke over Lynch into the 3rd round and was three clear of Revai and three others. Revai, the first round leader had an unfortunate second round of 79, and was still four behind with three holes to play, while other contenders fell by the wayside.
Revai then found the secret and recorded birdies at the 16th and 17th to cut the lead to two with one to play. Both the players hit their third shots onto the 18th green, where Revai completed his hat-trick of birdies. Fearnley, with everyone at the time not knowing the correct score, rolled his birdie putt to within inches and then tapped in for what, he only knew, was a one stroke victory.
NSW took out the teams event with Adam Revai and Guy Wall (Pymble Golf Club) recording an eight shot win (449) over the Queensland visitors Brett baker and Matt Dowling. Victoria’s Matt Oldham and John Beveridge three shots further back, with Beveridge returning the equal best tournament round of 70 in the final round.
The Pacific Dunes Golf Course having endured a deluge on Wednesday night was presented in a style befitting this championship by an enthusiastic Superintendent and staff to show itself as a leading NSW golf course.
