In-form Lee maintains lead at Keppera Bowl
IN: News | Queensland Mens | Keperra Bowl (2007) | Round Two | 16 May 2007
Day two of the 2007 Keperra Bowl was another day of low scoring with Australia’s most talented amateur golfers taking advantage of the favourable conditions at Keperra Country Golf Club. The day was highlighted by a sensational 64 (-8) fired by New South Wales golfer, Brent Watson (Longreef).
Watson put himself well in contention at 7 under par (after 36 holes) with the round that included seven birdies, an eagle and a disappointing bogey on the par 3, 4th. He trails the leader Kevin Lee (Oxley) who managed a round of 70 (-2) today after his course record 63 (-9) opening round.
In second place, two back from Lee on 9 under par are Kiwi, Leighton James (The Grange) after a 68 (-4), Andrew Dodt (Gatton) who returned a 70 (-2), and Brody Ninyette (Joondalup) who fired a 68 (-4) today.
Whilst it was Watson who returned the best score today, a number of other impressive rounds were also recorded including 65’s (-7) by Blake McGrory (Surfers Paradise) and Tim Bray (The Colonial). McGrory has already won a National Selection Trial Event this year, winning the Lake Macquarie Amateur held at Belmont in January and will certainly be happy with his position at 8 under par after 36 holes.
Promising young Queensland golfers Ben Fletcher (Virginia) and Gavin Fairfax (Pacific) fired 66’s (-6) today to put themselves in contention leading into the final two rounds. Fletcher moved to 6 under par and Fairfax to 8 under par after the 36 holes to be in equal 12th and equal 5th positions respectively.
84 players in total survived the halfway cut of 147 (+3) which is quite remarkable and is a great sign for golf in Queensland and Australia for that matter. The scoring this week has already been extraordinary and is bound to continue over the final 36 holes.
