Lee shoots 63 at Keperra Bowl

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Keperra Bowl (2007) | Round One | 15 May 2007

Kevin Lee (Oxley) has continued an unbelievable run of good form to post another course record in the opening round of the 2007 Keperra Bowl at the Keperra Country Golf Club, in Brisbane’s western suburbs. Lee the recently crowned Queensland Medalist fired a superb error free round which included 9 birdies on his way to a course record 63 (-9).

Lee was the dominant player two weeks ago in the Queensland Medal when he fired a 15 under total for the 72 holes around the Bribie Island Golf Club including a course record 64 (-8). He leads Bowl by two shots from National Squad member, Andrew Dodt (Gatton) who managed an impressive 30 (-6) on his outward nine holes for a round of 65 (-7). Dodt missed a couple of short putts on the way in, in a round that “could have been”, however he will no doubt be very pleased with his round. Dodt has played well recently with his year to date highlighted by his win in the Australian Amateur Stroke Play Championship at New South Wales Golf Club in March.

On a day that saw some phenomenal scoring, no doubt due to the hard and fast conditions brought about by the recent drought, 50 players broke the course par of 72. The greens this week have been presented beautifully and the combination of good greens and hard ground will surely ensure that the low scoring continues.

In equal third position after 67’s (-5) are four players including Brody Ninyette (Joondalup), Steve Sandilands (Surfers Paradise), Kiwi Leighton James (The Grange) and Rhys McGovern (Coolangatta Tweed).

Australian One Day cricketer James Hopes was a late entrant in the event, however showed that his talent extends beyond the game that pays his wage with a round of 71 that included two eagles. In an up and down round he managed eagles on the par 5, 9th and 13th holes.

The Keperra Bowl is Queensland’s National Selection Trial Event which attracts the leading amateur golfers from around Australia. The Golf Australia National Squad members are here this week, as well as 2 man teams from each of the 6 states.

Round two will commence tomorrow at 6:30am with the leading 80 players plus ties to survive tomorrow’s halfway 36 hole cut.
