Queensland has taken the outright lead after remaining undefeated through the opening two days of the 2007 Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches, at Barwon Heads Golf Club, Victoria.
In fickle weather, Queensland defeated the highly-fancied Victorian team 4½ matches to 2½ in their second round encounter. The contest was all square following the morning’s foursomes, however Queensland proved too strong in the singles matches, winning three and squaring one.
After defeating the Australian Amateur Champion yesterday, Cecilia Nha (Qld) continued her impressive form with a convincing 6 and 5 win over National Squad member Kate Combes (Vic). But the match of the day was between the National Squad pairing of Emma Bennett (Vic) and Bree Arthur (Qld). After going neck-and-neck through the day Bennett nearly claimed the match with an ace on the final hole, but the ball stopped an inch from the cup and the Victorian had to be satisfied with a half.
New South Wales sits behind Victoria in equal-third place with defending champions South Australia after defeating Western Australia 5 matches to 2. Kristie Smith (WA) holed a 55-foot putt on the final hole of her singles match to defeat Frances Bondad (NSW) 1up but the West Australian’s team mates were unable to overcome their opponents in the remaining four singles matches.
South Australia defeated Tasmania 5½ matches to 1½ with the Apple Isle’s sole win coming thanks to Jessica Oakes. Despite this minor slip-up the defending champions came through in the end with a four-point victory.
Round three commences tomorrow with the contest of the day undoubtedly Victoria versus New South Wales. Foursome matches commence 8am and singles matches commence at 12.30pm (AEST).
