Nineteen-year old Australian golf sensation Jason Day, the youngest player on the Nationwide Tour, will be among the competitors May 21-27 at the Melwood Prince George’s County Open at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, MD.
Last year, Day won USD$174,000 after an amazing run in which he played in seven PGA TOUR events.
A native of Rockhampton, Queensland, Jason was three years old when his father found an old golf club in the trash and offered it to his son as a toy.
“I always liked to hit things,” Day told PGA TOUR.com. “I went to a golf course for the first time at seven and attended all the junior clinics. I fell in love with the game. I’d run back from school and start playing.”
Jason Day’s father, Alvin Day, did not play golf. His death from cancer when Jason was 12 was a tragedy that almost ended his interest in the game, but Jason overcame a rebellious phase and celebrated his 17th birthday with a third round 62 in the Queensland PGA Championship, reaching a four-hole playoff.
“Jason Day is a golf phenomenon,” said Melwood Prince George’s County Open Tournament Director Teo Sodeman. “I believe Jason is certainly one of the great golfers of the future, and the fans will have an excellent opportunity to see a number of future stars in person here.”
The Melwood Prince George’s County Open features 156 professional golfers competing for a US$600,000 purse with the champion collecting US$108,000.
