Local talent shines at Wentworth

Day three at Wentworth has finished with two Englishmen tied for the lead. Local Wentworth lad Ross Fisher and fellow countryman Paul Broadhurst have opened a surprise one-stroke advantage over the all-star field.
Round three of the BMW PGA Championship was played out in cool, cloudy conditions, with the occasional rain shower. For the 76 pros, who made the cut on Friday evening, it was a day of highs and lows, with players trading birdies for bogeys on the demanding West Course.
None of the world famous early starters, however, including Ernie Els (par), Colin Montgomerie (par) and Jose Maria Olazabal (+3), succeeded in making an impression on the leaderboard.
That left the door open for the overnight leaders, Justin Rose and Angel Cabrera, to extend their 8-under score. But neither pro could handle the pressure. At the end of the day, Rose had dropped to 7-under, while the BMW Championship 2005 winner from Argentina was back at 4-under.
Instead, it will be Fisher and Broadhurst (both -10) who start in the lead flight tomorrow afternoon. For young Fisher, who grew up close to the course and won a scholarship to the Wentworth Club in 1994, it will be an especially memorable occasion. But the English pair will face plenty of tough competition. One shot behind lurk South Africa’s Richard Sterne and Australian Marcus Fisher (both -9). The likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Justin Rose and Paul Casey are also still in the hunt.
With much heavier rain forecasted overnight and all day tomorrow, organisers have moved forward the first tee-off time to 07:00 local time. Indeed, the biggest battle tomorrow could be against the elements. And with nine players all within six shots of the two leaders, the race for the coveted BMW PGA Championship is still truly wide open.
