Green looking for rare victory

BY Bruce Young | European PGA Tour | 2007 BA-CA Golf Open | Preview | 10 Jun 2007

Richard Green, who finished fourth in this event twelve months ago, takes a three shot lead into tomorrow’s final round of the BA-CA Golf Open in Vienna in Austria after his third round of 67 turned a one shot lead into three.

England’s Richard McEvoy is in second position after a brilliant round of 64, which had opened with a bogey at his very first hole. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Sweden’s Steven Jeppesen are one shot further back in a share of third and not yet without a chance.

Green finished with a last round of 63 in this event in 2006 to finish fourth behind Markus Brier and so has played his last four rounds around the Fontana Golf Club layout in 23 under par.

Green has been a prolific money winner on the European Tour but has only ever secured the one title there in 1997 in his first full season in Europe when he defeated Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam in a playoff to win the Dubai Classic. His only other victory of note in the professional ranks was the Australasian Tour’s MasterCard Masters in 2004.

The next best Australians were Matthew Zions, Simon Nash and David Bransdon who are in 28th position.
