John Senden and Mark Hensby were added to the list of Australians who have made it into this year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie when International Final qualifying was completed overnight.
The USPGA Tour’s qualifying took place at Oakland Hills in Michigan with twelve places up for grabs at that venue. John Senden’s brilliant opening round of 66 gave him the cushion to shoot 72 in round two and still finish second behind Michael Putnam, while Mark Hensby survived a playoff to get his chance to play this event yet again.
Hensby finished 15th at the Open in 2005 behind Tiger Woods at St Andrews while for Senden this will be his third Open having made the cut just once when 35th last year at Hoylake.
Stephen Allan missed getting one of the only three spots available to six players involved in the playoff while for Marc Leishman he finished one shot out of the playoff.
The news for Australians was not so good at International Final qualifying in England however with none of the ten contenders able to earn one of the sixteen spots on the table.
Australia now has eighteen players in the Open Championship field with New Zealander Michael Campbell further boosting the numbers from down under.
