Golf Australia announced that dual Ladies European Tour winner Nikki Garrett will contest in the 2008 MFS Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne.
The red hot 24-year old from Australia’s Central Coast was ecstatic at the prospect of playing the national championship at host club Kingston Heath.
“I’ve never played at Kingston Heath before, but I’ve heard great things about the course including how beautiful it is, so I am really looking forward to playing the MFS Women’s Australian Open here,” said Garrett upon hearing of the venue for the 2008.
Garrett, the 2006 Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year, claimed consecutive titles earlier this year at the Tenerife Ladies Open and Spanish Ladies Open to rocket into the women’s world Top 100. Her back-to-back wins ensured Australian women made a mark on the LET tour.
Illness interrupted her 2007 campaign, but Nikki is now fit, fresh and ready to continue her climb in the rankings. The 2008 MFS Women’s Australian Open provides Garrett an opportunity to showcase her talent in front of a home crowd.
“A win on home soil is next on my wish list, especially a national title,” concluded Nikki.
Garrett is also one of the sport’s glamour girls and her inclusion is sure to be a boost for galleries at Kingston Heath.
Golf Australia’s, Executive Chairman of the Australian Opens, Paul McNamee said: “This year saw the beginning of a new era for women’s golf with the Women’s Open back on the Australian tour. It’s fantastic to have rising stars like Nikki committed to the event.”
“The Women’s Open at the Heath on Melbourne’s famed sand belt will have a lot to offer golfing fans, local Aussie talent, skill and challenge on the course and an incredible venue.”
It will be the first time the Women’s Australian Open is played at Kingston Heath – one of the world’s leading golf clubs. Ranked 21 in the world, the club offers world-class surrounds and ambience.
The 2008 MFS Australian Open will be held from 31 January – 3 February, 2008.
