Recent tournament winners on the Japan Tour Australian Brendan Jones and New Zealander David Smail have made good starts in the grandly named Casio World Open in Japan. Played at the Ibusuki course about an hour from Kagoshima on the southern coast of Kyushu, the event brings to an end the series of lucrative end of season events before the season ending Japan Series next week.
Smail and Jones are tied in third place, one shot behind Kazuhiko Hosokawa and Tsukasa Watanabe who lead after opening rounds of five under 67.
Anthony Gilligan, Steve Conran and Richard Backwell are in 32nd place at one under, Richard Lee one shot further back in 51st place at even par.
The cut at present suggests a score of around even par, possibly one over, will make the cut.
The tournament carries a total purse of 140 million yen or $A2,000,000.
