Ogilvie gets the job done in Milwaukee
IN: News | US PGA | US Bank Championship (2007) | Round Four | by Bruce Young | 23 Jul 2007
Joe Ogilvie first joined the PGA Tour in 1999 and today, 230 starts later, he is a PGA Tour winner for the first time after winning the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
Not that Ogilvie has exactly been a struggling artist in that time. In the last three years he has won more than US$1 million in each season and has been on the threshold of victory on several occasions including two runner up finishes in 2005.
Ogilvie played the Nationwide Tour in 2003 and in fact won the Jacob's Creek Open in Adelaide during that year but was always destined to return to the PGA Tour after losing his card in 2002. He finished runner up on the Nationwide Tour money list in 2003 and was quickly back in the big league.
It had been several years since Ogilvie had played in Milwaukee but he took control midway through round two and although he was challenged over the final 36 holes, and actually lost the 54 hole lead, he emerged the winner after recovering from a struggling front nine holes in today's final round.
Ogilvie holed his approach to the 16th hole for an eagle to create a cushion for himself as he, Tim Herron and Tim Clark all looked potential winners with just a few holes to play.
Charlie Wi recovered from a shaky double bogey start to charge home with four birdies in his last five holes to share second place with Clark and Herron with Clark missing a chance for his first PGA Tour victory for the second week in succession.
Clark finished runner up to Jonathan Byrd last week at the John Deere Classic missing out not only on his first USPGA Tour win there but also the chance to play the British Open where he might have performed well. Still for Clark the signs are positive after struggling earlier in the season with a neck injury.
Steve Allan was the best of the Australians finishing in 13th place, again performing well on a golf course where he finished runner up in 2003. Allan has made ten of 13 cuts in 2007 but needs more finishes like this if he is to regain his status for 2008. Recent results have shown a growing improvement.
Mathew Goggin was 28th, Jarrod Lyle 37th, Steve Elkington 46th, Nathan Green 57th and Stephen Leaney 67th.
The PGA Tour now crosses the border into Canada for this week's Canadian Open in Markham, Ontario.
