Despite a rollercoaster first round, Robert Allenby managed to post a -2 (70) and is just two shots off the pace after day one of the USD$4.2 million Sun City Nedbank Challenge in South Africa. South African Retief Goosen and Chris DiMarco took the opening round lead after each posting -4 (68) in hot and humid conditions.

Allenby’s round was marred by three bogeys but he still managed to card five birdies to reduce the deficit to two strokes and is in a group of three players, including defending champion Sergio Garcia and Ernie Els, at -2 and equal 4th place.

Kiwi Michael Campbell and Zimbabwe’s Nick Price carded 71 a piece to finish in equal 7th. Price cost himself dearly at the 18th with a tricky greenside bunker shot leaving him with a double-bogey and the chance to finish in equal 3rd place along side American Jim Furyk.
