Flanagan victory secures US PGA Tour card

Nick Flanagan today confirmed his USPGA Tour status for the remainder of the 2007 season by producing a brilliant final round of 63 and winning his third Nationwide Tour title of the season, the Xerox Classic in Rochester, New York.
Courtesy of the Battlefield Promotion category, whereby any winner of three events in a season on the Nationwide Tour is entitled to play the PGA Tour for the remainder of the season, Flanagan is now a PGA Tour cardholder.
For Flanagan, the first event he would be eligible to play would be the Turning Stone Resort Championship starting on September 20th as the next four weeks on the PGA Tour are occupied by the FedEx Cup series. He will have seven PGA Tour events available to him but it might be that he mixes a few of those with one or two more on the Nationwide Tour. With no PGA Tour events in which he can play for a month he will perhaps choose to compete in two of the three Nationwide events in that time in order to prepare his game for his debut as a card holder on the PGA Tour.
Flanagan has already played 11 PGA Tour events, his best finish coming in 2005 at St Andrews where he finished 23rd at the Open Championship. Most of those events were on invite or as a result of his 2003 US Amateur victory, but after struggling in those events the invites began to dry up.
Flanagan gained Nationwide Tour status late in 2005 via the USPGA Tour School and after solid first season in 2006, things have improved significantly in 2007. He won consecutive events over a three week period in April and May that had virtually assured him of a place in the bigtime in 2008. This win not only confirms that status but advances the timeline.
Flanagan’s eagle at the third today got things moving forward and when he added a birdie at the 9th to turn in 32 the possibility of a victory was becoming a reality. A back nine of four under 31 was good enough to edge out James Driscoll by one after Driscoll fell victim to a double bogey at the 16th.
Jason Day continued his remarkable rookie season on the Nationwide Tour with yet another top ten (his 7th of the season) to finish third. Day lost a place on the Nationwide Tour money list as Flanagan moved past him to second on the money list behind Roland Thatcher but Day is in third position and in great shape for his arrival on the PGA Tour in January of 2008.
David McKenzie was 4th, Tim Wilkinson 12th, Michael Long was 35th and Matthew Jones 40th.
The Nationwide Tour moves to Bridgeport, West Virginia, for the National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic.
