Golf Australia have announced that triple Australian Open winner, Karrie Webb, will defend her title in the 2008 MFS Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne.

Webb is considered amongst the greatest Australian golfers of all-time, her record unmatched in Australian golf history. The signs for her competitors are ominous – the World number two and seven-time major winner has recaptured her scintillating form and is keen to add a third Australian Open title to her previous wins in 2000, 2002 and 2007.

“With the Women’s Australian Open on the schedule, it’s such an exciting opportunity to play a great course in Kingston Heath. It’s got all the girls on the tour talking about it.”

The announcement reinforces Karrie’s commitment to Australian women’s golf, on the back of the recently announced Karrie Webb Series and the Karrie Webb Scholarship program, as part of Australia’s elite golf development program for young Australian women golfers.

“I’m not going to play forever and I’d like to have a hand in developing these great young players.”

Golf Australia’s Executive Chairman of the Australian Opens, Paul McNamee said: “This announcement is a tremendous reinforcement of the Open’s resurgence. Australian women’s golf is on the rise, in no small part to Karrie’s efforts and achievements.”

“Karrie’s support is unwavering and we are delighted she has committed to defend her title.”

It will be the first time the Women’s Australian Open is played at Kingston Heath – one of the world’s leading golf clubs.

“Kingston Heath is a world class course and will provide the perfect setting for the action,” said McNamee.

The 2008 MFS Australian Open will be held from 31 January – 3 February, 2008.
