The Australian and International amateur golfers faced kinder conditions during the second round of the Federal Amateur Open being played at the Federal Golf Club in Canberra.
WA state squad member Brenton Haines fired a superb 69 (3-under par) to move into a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard on 142.
“I’m very happy with the way I hit the ball today and on the greens, even though the cold and windy conditions still made it challenging.”
Andre Na (Grange GC, SA) had another consistent round of 70 (2 under par) to join Haines at the top of the leaderboard alongside Luke Bleumick (Heritage GC) who also shot a two under par 70 to add to his overnight 72.
There are a group of players chasing the leaders, including Brendon Smith who had a one under par 71 to be on 143 with Daniel Beckman (VIC) who also had a 71. English amateur golfer, Dale Whitnell who followed up his first round 71 with a one over par 73, sits on 144. He is joined two shots behind the leader by Ryan Macarthy (TAS).
A total of 61 players made the cut of 154 (+10) or better and will progress through to the final two rounds on Sunday and Monday.
Federal Golf Club General Manager, Chris Hume said “The lighter winds made scoring easier than on the first day and with the field reduced by half for the last two rounds, the championship is well set up for a number of players over the last two rounds”.
Previous winners of the Open include Rick Kulacz (2006), Andrew Martin (2005), Gavin Flint (2004), Nick Flanagan (2003) and Andrew McKenzie (2002).
Play starts again at 7am tomorrow on the 1st and 10th tees with the higher profile players hitting off between 8 to 8.30am.
The prestigious Federal Cup for amateur club golfers will also held on Sunday and Monday with a field of over 70 competing for a range of prizes.
