Beckmann bends it at Federal

Daniel Beckmann from Victoria takes a five shot buffer into the final round of the Federal Amateur after a three under third round 69, to be four under for the tournament.
Beckmann’s nearest rival is Brendan Smith, Andre Na and English amateur golfer, Dale Whitnell, who are all one over. Overnight leader Brenton Haines dropped back into the pack after carding a third round 80 to be on 222. Luke Bleumink and Michael Foster are both at three over, seven strokes from Beckmann.
Beckmann, 19, plays out of Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne, although originally from Heidelberg Golf Club, where he won the 2005 Club Championship. Only last month he recently blitzed the field at the 2007 Portsea Open Amateur, running away with a nine shot victory after a closing 65.
He will undoubtedly be aiming for a similar result in Canberra during today’s final round, however, was cautious about if another 65 will be in the making.
“The Federal is a course that you need to move your ball around carefully,” remarked Beckmann.
“You have to shape and bend you tee shot on a lot of holes and the conditions out there have been windy for the last three rounds and that’s making scoring difficult.”
The only player this week to be under par, Beckmann is well positioned to take out his first major Australian amateur title.
The final round will make interesting scoring as the rest of the field attempts to close in on the five stroke buffer.
England’s Dale Whitnell appears to be Beckmann’s nearest threat. Runner-up in the 2007 French Amateur, the Englishman starts in the final group along with Andre Na who are both plus one.
