The 2007 Japan Women’s Open Golf championship was today won by 21-year-old Shinobu Moromizato who, in doing so, won her second Japan LPGA event.
Moromizato played the USLPGA Tour for much of last season but lost her status and has focused in Japan this season.
Only 160 cm tall, Mormizato is developing into one of the golfing stars in Japan and had already recorded 12 top tens in 24 starts this season prior to this week and another win was only just a matter of time. This, however, was a win of significance taking her own national title at the Tarumae Country Club in Hokkaido.
Despite a final round of 73, Moromizato held at bay one of Japan Ladies golf’s most prolific winners, Yuri Fudo, to win by one shot after Fudoh bogeyed the 17th when looking to be a likely winner.
Australian Nikki Campbell finished strongly over the closing holes to grab third alone. It was Campbell’s fourth top ten in five starts in this prestigious event and equalled her previous best finish of third in 2003. The third prize of ¥10,000,000 has moved Campbell to 14th on the Japan Ladies Golf Tour money list with ¥37,000,000, her second highest earning season.
