Nisbet shoots 65 at Gary Player Classic

BY iseekgolf.com | Queensland Mens Tour | 2007 Gary Player Classic | Round Two | 03 Oct 2007

After an uncharacteristic slow start from last year’s champion, Daniel Nisbet (Caboolture) has again shown he enjoys the Pacific Golf Club layout with an impressive 65 (-7) today.

Starting with a 76 (+4) yesterday in the opening round, Nisbet put together a bogey free round that included 7 birdies, to make up ground on the overnight leader Aiden Bae (Gosnells) in the 16 – 17 Year division after 36 holes. Bae managed another excellent round of 69 (-3) for a total of 138 (-6) to lead Nisbet by 3 shots. In second place after a 68 (-4) today is Mohamad Jamil (Malaysia) at 139 (-5) for the 2 rounds.

Amazingly in last year’s event, Nisbet showed extraordinary talent to shoot 2 rounds of 64 (-8) within three days, opening with one and then adding another on the third day. He went on to win the event and is in excellent position again this year at the half way point.

2006 15 Years and under winner, Chris Wood (Wynnum) played well today shooting a 70 (-2) to be at even par (144) for the 36 holes.

Leading the 18 – 20 Years division is Blake McGrory (Surfers Paradise) who added a 69 (-3) today to his opening 68 (-4) to be at 137 (-7) after 36 holes. He leads Queensland Amateur Champion Rika Batibasaga (Indooroopilly) who managed a 67 (-5) to trail McGrory by just one shot heading into tomorrow’s third round.

Young guns Taylor MacDonald (Pine Rivers) and Hyung Jun Kim (Emerald Lakes) lead the 15 Years and under division after rounds of 74 & 75 to be at 149 (+5). Taylor Cooper (Helensvale) fired the lowest round of the day for the age group with an impressive 71 (-1) for the 15 year old.

The Gary Player Classic is held within 3 age groups, 15 Years and Under, 16 – 17 Years and 18 – 20 Years. It is one of the country’s most prestigous junior golf championships attracting young male golfers from all over Australia, and internationally. The event dates back to 1972 and has been a stepping stone for some of Australia’s best golfers including Greg Norman, Adam Scott and Jason Day.

All players will play their third round tomorrow, with the leading 25 players in each age group proceeding through to the final on Friday morning.
