Win number seven for Ochoa

BY Bruce Young | LPGA Tour | 2007 Samsung World Championship | Round Four | 15 Oct 2007

Lorena Ochoa’s domination of the world of women’s golf was further highlighted today when she won the Samsung World Championship of Women’s Golf in California by four shots over Mi Hyun Kim.

Ochoa, who was defending the title she won last year, led from the completion of the second round, although she shared that lead at that point with her nearest rival on the LPGA Tour in 2007, Suzann Pettersen. Pettersen kept Ochoa honest through much of the front nine holes on day four but when she bogeyed the 9th the writing appeared to be on the wall.

Ochoa quickly drew clear and as Pettersen continued to falter it would be Jeong Jang and then Mi Hyun Kim who would emerge as the player most likely to finish second. Kim produced a brilliant last nine of 32 to grab outright second just ahead of Angela Park and Jeong Jang with Pettersen finishing 5th.

For Ochoa it was her 7th win of the season and takes her a remarkable US$1.9 million ahead of her nearest challenger Pettersen on the 2007 LPGA Tour Order of Merit. Ochoa has earnings of US$3,280,000 already US$400,000 ahead of Sorenstam’s best season in 2002.

The LPGA Tour now heads to Asia for tournaments in Korea, Thailand and Japan before returning to the US for the final event of the season the ADT Championship in Florida.
