Webster caps tough year with Portugal win

Steve Webster today won his second European Tour event more than two years after his first and confirmed a return to form over the past three months.
Webster has had a tough year losing his mother to cancer earlier this season and struggling with a back injury. His two shot win at the Portugal Masters came more nearly 30 months after his win in the 2005 Italian Open.
“I am proud the way I have been able to overcome a tough year and played the way I have of late. I felt this week I had been playing well and putting well and if I had not won this week I would have wondered when I would win again.”
He is now in his highest ever position on the European Tour in the ten years he has played and with a start now at the end of season Volvo Masters this could well turn out to be an even better year for him yet.
Webster broke clear of the pack when he eagled the 12th and when he added three further birdies he had the luxury of being able to take bogey at the last and still win by two over Robert Karlsson and by six over Frederik Andersson Hed, Lee Westwood, Peter Hanson and Daniel Vancsik.
Vancsik, who is in his second season on the European Tour, let a winning opportunity slip for the second consecutive week having led into this week’s final round and also at last week’s Madrid Open.
The best of the Australians was Brett Rumford who finished 16th, with Terry Price 56th.
