Turnesa wins Miccosukee, McKenzie consolidates

Marc Turnesa has won his first Nationwide Tour event in his rookie season and in doing so has guaranteed himself a place on the PGA Tour in 2008.
Turnesa’s win in this week’s Miccosukee Championship in Florida has moved him to 13th place on the money list and he has the luxury of entering next week’s Tour Championship without the worry of having to perform well to earn his way to the USPGA Tour. It was a shaky start to the day for the third round leader but he quickly recovered from two early bogeys with an eagle at the 5th. Turnesa’s brilliant second round of 63 had set up the victory and the 29-year-old with a golfing pedigree is now on his way to the bigtime.
Turnesa’s great uncle won the USPGA Championship and his grandfather Mike won six events on the USPGA Tour so Marc continues a rather impressive family tradition.
David McKenzie was the best of the Australasians when 16th and has improved one position to 23rd on the money list. That leaves him precariously placed as the Nationwide Tour enters its Tour Championship this week with only the top 25 only moving to the PGA Tour next season.
He has the luxury of being inside the top 25 however whereas other Australasians, Scott Gardiner, Tim Wilkinson, Aron Price, and Greg Chalmers will need a big week in next week’s restricted field Tour Championship in California.
Nick Flanagan, Jason Day and Matthew Jones are already assured of a place on the USPGA Tour next year.
