Queenslander Tony Carolan and West Australian Steve Collins share the early lead in the first round of the $1.25 million Mastercard Masters at Huntingdale Golf Club in Victoria. The morning has been marred by rain and strong winds, which are forecast to continue through to Saturday.

Carolan is currently on the 8th hole and has birdied the 1st, 4th and 6th holes to move to -3, alongside Steve Collins and two strokes clear of a group of fifteen players including recent Australian PGA co-winners, Peter Lonard and Jarrod Moseley, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley and more.

Clubhouse leaders are Victoria’s Martin Doyle and Wayne Riley, who both closed with round of 71 to finish at -1.

Wet conditions have caused problems on the fairways with surface water shortening drives and making for tough putting conditions.

Young American star, Ty Tryon, who is playing in Aaron Baddeley’s group, had been down as low as -2 but three bogeys pulled him back to Even par at the 14th hole. Also in the group is veteran, Nick Faldo, who dropped two shots early in the round but recomposed himself to remain at 2 through 14 holes.

Stuart Appleby, Tom Watson and Adam Scott are -1, 1 and Even respectively after two holes.
