Weather wrecks havoc at Lake Macquarie

Stephanie Na fired an opening round of 74 to take a two-stroke lead ahead of Julia Boland into the second round of the Lake Macquarie Women’s Amateur, currently being played at Belmont Golf Club.

Na, a semi-finalist at the 2007 Australian Amateur Championship and member of the National Squad, was able to withstand the difficult conditions to post a respectable one-over-par 74 on a day where the majority of the field struggled with the exposed links layout.

Rebecca Flood, also a National Squad member, finished her opening round with 78, to be in third position, a single stroke from a group of four players, including the recent Australian Girls Amateur Champion, Whitney Hillier, at six-over-par 79.

The second round this morning is again plagued by strong winds and driving rain that is pounding the Lake Macquarie region just south of Newcastle in New South Wales.
