Gamez on track for full Tour status
BY Bruce Young | US PGA Tour | 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic | Round Three | 19 Jan 2008
Robert Gamez added a third round of 67 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and leads by one over previous winner, Justin Leonard and D.J. Trahan as the event enters the final round of rotation golf. Boo Weekly is alone in fourth place, two shots behind Leonard and Trahan.
Gamez last won on the PGA Tour in 2005, 15 years after his initial two victories in 1990. The 39-year-old is playing without full USPGA Tour status in 2008 after his exemption for the 2005 victory ran out at the end of last season. He withdrew from the PGA Tour School late last year but is on track to make amends this week.
The Australian challenge remained intact with Steve Elkington at 13 under and rookie Brett Rumford at 12 under still very much in contention especially given that there are still 36 holes to play.
Mathew Goggin and John Senden are at 9 under while Matt Jones, Mark Hensby and Rod Pampling are at 8 under and Robert Allenby at five under.
The cut will be made at the completion of tomorrow’s fourth round with the top 70 and ties advancing to Sunday’s final round at the host venue, the Classic Club.
