Hoch continues winning year at Western Open

He hasn’t always shown an ability to finish off in tournaments but it appears this season that Scott Hoch has developed just that, with this outstanding win over Davis Love, his second in under three months. Not only has he been winning but in his last ten starts, his worst finish is 16th including the two wins and six top tens.
It was one of the great final round duels in recent times with Love, who had led from the start, and Hoch separating themselves from the field early in the last round and drawing clear. Two late bogies by Love at 16 and 18 proved the difference in the end with Hoch, who had only three bogies in the 72 holes, outlasting his younger opponent with a last round of 64. For Hoch it was his tenth career win since joining the tour in 1980 but during that time he has had some 150 top tens.
His $US648,000 for his win takes him to fourth on this season’s money list with $US2500,000 and his career earnings to more than $14,000,000. He is now the fourth highest money winner in the games history. He is one of the straighter drivers on tour and a very good short iron player although funnily enough today it let him down a little, and his putting this year is as good as it has been.
Hoch hasn’t always endeared himself to his peers and tournament administrators and golf fans with rather ‘to the point’ comments at times, but he says it as he sees it and perhaps no one should be denied that right. For Love it was heartening to see him back to nearly full fitness following a tough time of late with a niggling neck injury. This has curtailed his campaign this season somewhat but it has still been an outstanding year with a win, two seconds and eight top tens in thirteen starts.
Of the Australasians, Nobilo was the best in 20th place ($30,000) and Greg Chalmers, the only Australian to make the cut, at 43rd ($12,000). Of the favoured brigade Tiger Woods had his worst finish since this event last year with a twentieth placing, Phil Mickelson was 37th and Vijay Singh yet another top ten in tenth spot.
