Leishman tops Vic PGA on day two

Talented Victorian Marc Leishman has a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark of the nab Victorian PGA Championship.
The 24-year-old from Warrnambool added a four-under par 68 to an opening round 67 for a total of nine-under.
Sharing second place one shot back are power hitter Kurt Barnes and former champion Cameron Percy.
On a day when sub-par rounds were the norm, Leishman went out early with a game plan that revolved around making birdies and plenty of them.
An eagle on the eighth hole where he holed a pitch shot from 70 metres was the highlight of a topsy-turvy round that also included six birdies.
Leishman is competing in his first tournament of the year after taking off a month and not touching a golf club.
“I really needed to freshen up after playing so many events and traveling a lot in the US,” he said.
“So it was great to get home, freshen up and make the most of the break.”
The 24-year-old is keen to secure a win in the PGA Championship after finishing second and third at his two previous attempts.
Standing in his way, though, may be another budding star from regional Victoria.
Amateur Leighton Lyle hails from Shepparton in northern Victoria and signaled his thirst for competition against the professionals by posting rounds of 69, 68.
Lyle is even more under prepared than Leishman, having spent the past 12 months caddying for brother Jarrod on the USPGA Tour.
“Last year was great watching all the best players in the world at close quarters but I really neglected my own game,” Lyle explained.
“I probably only played once a month and hit the odd ball on the range.
“Not much at all really. But while on Tour I did learn a lot about course management. I watched what they did on the tee, what they were thinking and how they planned each hole.”
Lyle will play alongside Australian golf legend Peter Senior in tomorrow’s third round after his rounds of 68 and 69.
Former tennis professional Scott Draper displayed his ever-improving golf game to comfortably survive the cut on five-under after rounds of 72 and 67. The scorecard of the multi-talented Queenslander would have looked more impressive if it weren’t for an ugly triple-bogey six on the short par 3 11th.
Round three of the 2008 nab Victorian PGA Championship gets underway tomorrow at Sanctuary Lakes Resort from 9.20am.
