A deluge of rain on the Gold Coast late on Wednesday afternoon has left the tournament organisers with no option but to cancel Thursday’s opening round and reduce the event to 54 holes.
After a promising start to Pro-Am day where many of the field were able to get access to the damp Royal Pines layout for the first occasion this week, the forecast storms arrived almost on time and with nearly two inches of rain falling in 90 minutes the inevitable decision was made.
Despite the amount of rain that has fallen on the Gold Coast in recent weeks, the layout at Royal Pines was in surprisingly good shape with two of the pre-tournament favourites, Karrie Webb and Laura Davies, suggesting the greens were in the best shape they had been in for several years.
The fairways and bunkering have taken a bit of a hammering although with fine weather expected over the next few days the tournament should complete 54 holes and by Sunday all the drama of earlier in the week may well be forgotten.
The last time the event was reduced to 54 holes was in 2003 when Laura Davies defeated Karrie Webb and Rebecca Stevenson to win her third ANZ ladies Masters title.
