The Canadian team is off to a great start at the US$3 million EMC World Cup in Mexico with the Australian team of Craig Parry and Adam Scott just one stroke off the pace. Canada’s Mike Weir and Ian Leggatt, ranked 42nd and 141st in the world, respectively, posted an eagle and eleven birdies on their way to breaking the magic figure of 59.
Parry and Scott took the slightly harder route to get to their total of 60 with their round consisting of 12 birdies, six on the way out and six coming in. They take outright second place into tomorrow’s “Foursome” matches.
The French team of Thomas Levet and Raphael Jacquelin and the South Korean pair of KJ Choi and SK Ho are tied in third place following rounds of 61. Defending champions, South Africa sit in equal 5th alongside Sweden at -10.
Phil Mickelson and David Toms, who came into this week as tournament favourites, have begun slowly with a first round of -7 (65) to leave themselves in equal 16th at -7. World number one, Tiger Woods decided to skip the event after playing in several recent end-of-year events.
The New Zealand team of Craig Perks and Michael Campbell posted a – (65) to close the day in a tie with the US and England.
