Ogilvy, Scott challenge Tiger at Doral
IN: News | European PGA | CA Championship (2008) | Round Two | by Bruce Young | 22 Mar 2008
Geoff Ogilvy maintained his lead at the WGC-CA Championship at the Doral Resort and Spa near Miami, adding a second round of 67 to his opening 65 and at 12 under he leads by one over the fast finishing Tiger Woods and by three over Adam Scott, who sits in outright third place.
Despite some wayward driving, the remainder of Ogilvy’s game is in great shape, especially his putting, whch is reflected in the fact that he is bogey-free after 36 holes here this week. If he plans on holding off the world number one over the closing two days it is his driving, or at least the accuracy of it, that will need to improve.
Woods birdied his final two holes today to move to 11 under after threatening to blow the tournament apart when he produced his second eagle of the day at his 10th hole. He had then moved to five under for the day and 10 under for the tournament but a bogey at his 12th slowed his momentum and although he finished with consecutive birdies, Ogilvy’s fast finish gave the Australian the lead.
Adam Scott started the day well when he birdied four of his first five holes and when he added his 7th birdie of the day at the 16th he was in a tie with Woods and one behind Ogilvy, but a faltering finish would prove costly.
A pulled tee shot at his 16th hole left him in a flower garden and with no relief available he was forced to play left handed. He advanced it back onto the fairway and although he hit a good third, he missed the par save and dropped a shot and would do the same again at his last (the 9th of the course) when he pulled his tee shot into the water left.
In the end he salvaged a good bogey at the last and is within three of the lead heading into the weekend.
There is a break of three shots back to a group of three European Tour players including Jeev Milkha Singh, Robert Karlsson and Anders Hansen who are at 6 under and six behind the leader.
The next best of the Australians after Scott is Nick O’Hern, who after an opening round of 67, struggled to the turn today in 40 before recovering with a back nine of 35 to be at 2 under and in 32nd place.
Aaron Baddeley is at 1 under while Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby are the next best of the Australians at even par.
