Ogilvy in front at suspended WGC-CA
IN: News | European PGA | CA Championship (2008) | Round Three | by Bruce Young | 23 Mar 2008
The third round of the WGC-CA Championship at the Doral Resort and Spa has been suspended following three hours of heavy rain, the stoppage initially coming at 1.15 and, with no further play possible, the 61 players who are yet to complete their third rounds will return at 8.30am on Sunday.
As play was called, Geoff Ogilvy had maintained his lead but his nearest pursuer had become fellow Australian Adam Scott. Scott eagled the first and then added further birdies at the third and fifth holes to move to 13 under and at that point one ahead of Ogilvy.
By the time he reached the turn however Ogilvy was back in front courtesy of birdies at the 7th and 9th holes and his lead was by one over Scott. They were both on the 12th tee when play was brought o an early halt.
Moves were coming from back in the pack, more especially from Vijay Singh and Tim Clark. Singh faces a 7 foot birdie attempt at his 17th hole when he returns in the morning and if he is able to make it he moves within two of the lead. Singh turned in two under 34 but he then put together an eagle and four birdies over his next seven holes and has a genuine chance to add another on his return.
South African Clark was on the 16th tee when the siren sounded. He had just holed from 10 feet at the 15th for his 7th birdie of the day and had moved from 10th to a share of third with Singh and Tiger Woods. Singh had come from 20th overnight.
Woods was unable to convert the opportunities he continued to create for himself. There will be much interest in how he finishes off his round tomorrow and how much of a gap, if any, there is between he and either Ogilvy or Scott before the final round gets underway.
Nick O’Hern recovered from his second round 75 to add a round of 67 and improve his chances of another good week at Doral to follow his 6th on debut twelve months ago.
Robert Allenby recorded a round of 66 to improve 29 places to 17th and at six under, although too far back to contend, he looks to be in with a chance of another good week at Doral to follow his share of third place last year. His was the best of the eighteen completed rounds on day three, although Brendan Jones was five under through 12 holes of his third round having been forced to start at the 10th following two ordinary opening rounds.
