Local knowledge helps Na to the top

Golf Australia/AIS National Squad member Stephanie Na made the most of her local knowledge, returning a five-under 69 to seize the opening round lead at the Srixon Australian Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Glenelg Golf Club.
Na’s round included seven birdies, which was the difference as she established a three-stroke buffer from Australian team mate Kristie Smith and Rebecca Flood of New South Wales, who both posted solid two-under scores of 72.
A host of players including England’s Naomi Edwards and Florentyna Parker, as well as Glenelg’s own Christine Trimmer are all four shots off the pace after posting 73’s.
The links layout at Glenelg tested the players and a moderate southwesterly breeze added to the challenge.
The Championship continues with Monday’s second round as the players not only have their eye on the overall prize and a berth in the 2009 Women’s Australian Open, but also a spot in the top 32 which qualify for the match play at Royal Adelaide Golf Club.
The men also get their Srixon Australian Amateur campaign underway on Monday with the players to contest their first round of stroke play at either Royal Adelaide or The Grange Golf Clubs before alternating on Tuesday. The leading 100 players plus ties will then contest the final two rounds of men’s stroke play, also at Royal Adelaide.
