Victorian Heath Reed has claimed the biggest win of his professional career in today’s OG Roberts SA PGA Championship at Blue Lake Golf Links, Mt Gambier.
Reed went wire-to-wire, shooting a five-under 62 in the final round to beat off 15 other contenders to claim the prestigious title.
At 20-under, Reed finished two shots clear of Queenslander Peter Senior (64-63-61-62) and New South Welshmen Tristan Lambert (65-63-63-59) and Aaron Townsend (64-63-61-62).
Reed, 27 iced his dramatic victory with a punched eight-iron shot through the trees onto the 18th green and two-putting for par.
“I’m just so excited, I can’t believe I have won today.”
“Leading from start to finish makes this victory so much sweeter.”
“I played well throughout the week and knew that if I could stick to my game plan, that someone else would have to play extra special to beat me,” an emotional Reed explained following his victory.
With his breakthrough win Reed not only improves his bank balance but also adds his name to the trophy alongside Australian champions Stuart Appleby and Craig Parry.
Lambert was a frustrated runner-up.
After sizzling around the front nine in five-under, Lambert claimed the outright lead and a sniff of victory.
However a costly mistake on 13, driving his ball out-of-bounds put a halt to his title hopes.
Townsend was another to rue his missed chances of winning his maiden Von Nida Tour victory.
Today being his fifth runner-up placing in Von Nida Tour events.
After moving into contention on day three, Senior couldn’t get anything going and finished with birdies on 17 and 18 and a tie for second place.
The 2008 OG Roberts SA PGA Championship is part of the Von Nida Tour, a series of 11 events held around the nation that provide the next wave of up-and-coming stars a decent grounding in 72-hole golf tournaments.
