Spearman-Burn wins NZ Amateur

IN: News | New Zealand Mens Amateur | New Zealand Amateur Championship (2008) | Grand Final | 29 Apr 2008

Thomas Spearman-Burn, 18 (Miramar) made it a Wellington treble, holding off the challenge from national representative Kevin Smith (Tauranga) 4 and 2 in the men’s Amateur final. This follows wins by Paraparaumu Beach players Sean Kells and Shaun Richards in the foursomes and James Betts in the New Zealand Strokeplay this week.

The Miramar club won the O’Rorke Challenge Vase for the leading club, believed to be the first time that one province has won all honours at the New Zealand Amateur.

Spearman-Burn, 18, trailled the more experienced Smith by two after nine holes this morning but won four in five holes to take a 3-up lead into the break.

Smith was able to reduce the margin to two holes but the teenager was able to starve off the challenge with a superb short game to claim the victory.

Spearman-Burn was three-under this morning and four-under par this afternoon with both players in red figures in both rounds to highlight an outstanding final.

Despite his lack of experience, Spearman-Burn was not fazed with the final.

“I was calm the whole day and relaxed and didn’t have pressure on me,” Spearman-Burn said. “I just wanted to have fun. It’s my first tournament for a while after a shoulder injury so I just wanted to enjoy it.

“I’m absolutely stoked. It’s my biggest win in New Zealand so you can’t do much better.

“My plan was to keep it in play and my short game was really good all week. I think that was the key for me.”

He hopes the win will be a catalyst for things to come as he now has matched the feats of his twin brother Peter, who will play for New Zealand in the Trans Tasman Cup against Australia at Royal Wellington GC on Thursday and Friday.
