Kim dominates NZ Amateur for victory

Dana Kim, 19 (Christchurch) followed her win in the Foursomes with Penny Smith and New Zealand Strokeplay earlier this week with an emphatic victory today in the final of the New Zealand Matchplay for the Stead Cup, beating Whakatane teenager Zoe Brake 7 and 5 in the 36 hole final.

Kim becomes the first New Zealander to win the strokeplay-matchplay double at the same championship since Brenda Ormsby in 1980, although Ormsby won both in separate tournaments 12 years ago.

She is the first woman from Christchurch Golf Club to win the New Zealand Amateur title in 46 years.

Kim was all class this week, holding off Brake by one shot to win the strokeplay title but producing her best golf of the championship, making six birdies and three eagles in her 31 holes.

“I feel happy that it’s all over. I thought about one more day and I focussed more,” Kim said.

“I was really happy with my short game today. I made some putts from long distance and made some eagles which were important. It feels great to be the first in a long time to win both titles.”

Kim said the victory was the biggest of her career but she will now reset her focus for the Trans Tasman Cup against Australia on Thursday and Friday at Royal Wellington.

“I am looking forward to that. I really want to beat the Aussies.”

It was also a superb week for Brake who has established herself as a challenger for the Espirito Santo team for the world championship later this year.
