Boyd Watts leads QLD Medal at Nudgee

The 2008 Queensland Medal commenced this morning at Nudgee Golf Club in cool yet pleasant conditions. Yeppoon’s Boyd Watts posted the day’s lowest round with a 66 (-5) this afternoon to lead the championship by one shot. His round consisted of seven birdies, with bogeys on the 9th and 10th holes.
Watts, the 2006 Australian Boys Amateur Champion turned 18 in January and today signalled that he is ready to step up in the open age ranks. It will be interesting watching his progress over the next two days.
In second place is Gavin Fairfax (Pacific), who played this morning returning a 67 (-4). Another Pacific member and Queensland State Team member Brett Rankin, is in good position following his opening round of 68 (-3).
A further shot back on 69 (-2) is a host of players incuding Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise), Adam Gemmell (Ipswich) and Scott Smith (Pacific).
The Queensland Medal is Queensland’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship and also serves as the qualifying event for the Queensland Amateur Championship (Match Play) with the leading 16 players qualifying for next week at Bribie Island Golf Club.
The leading 60 players (plus ties) will make the cut after tomorrow’s second round and will then play 36 holes on Friday.
